That’s not to say that girls who play video games are true unicorns, never to be seen but in fantasy and legend, which would be a fallacious assertion indeed.

But it’s undeniable that most video games just don’t catch a woman’s interest. The deck is stacked against female interest in gaming, so what are we to do? Is dating a gamer girl even a realistic goal?

Before we go any further, I should qualify that when I speak of “gamer girls” in this post, I’m talking about hardcore console queenies or, at least serious hobbyists. There’s nothing stopping girls from picking up a controller and killing an hour on some random title once in awhile, and many of them will happily do so.
There are even plenty of games out there that were designed and marketed with female players specifically in mind; they tend to feature lower than average challenge points, avoid epic storylines spanning an array of sequels, and usually are not visually-oriented. Rhythm games and the lighter puzzle entries are good examples.

There is nothing wrong with any of these games, nor with women playing them; I’m just pointing out that girls as a rule are attracted by a different style of gaming than guys are, and the kinds they like tend not to require a major commitment of time or effort. Today, I’m talking about female players who like the ones that do, and who have put in the energy to earn real skill at them.
While, again, they may not be common, there are certainly lots of women who fit this category, and many of them have become well-known for their love of gaming. Kim Ga Young of South Korea, who goes by her nickname of “Aphrodite”, is a professional Starcraft 2 player and has won televised gaming tournaments. Melonie Mac runs a YouTube channel dedicated to gaming and other geeky content, and is an all-around gamer who loves, among many other titles, the latest Legend of Zelda installment (Breath of the Wild).
And then there is Alodia Almira Arraiza Gosiengfao from the Philippines, who takes her love of video games to conventions as a cosplayer. She loves Ragnorak Online and Final Fantasy X-2, but she plays (and dresses as characters from) many different games and series.
Alright, but these are celebrities, right? They’re out of reach of the common man. What’s an average fellow looking for some gamer girl dating options to do? Well, on that front, I’ve got some good news. While, as we’ve covered, gaming remains a male-dominated demographic, those numbers are changing.
Every year, more and more girls enter the gamer force, and it’s a trend that shows no signs of slowing. So finding these fabled women is nowhere near so difficult as it perhaps once was. But, that’s the good news. The bad news is that for any given woman you see on the street (or in typical meet-up spots, like bars or parties), the odds are still high that she isn’t the droid you’re looking for. You’ve got to know where to do your gamer girl date shopping, because not just any old place will cut it.
As Alodia above shows us, conventions are actually an excellent place for this. It should come as no surprise that gamer girls are attracted to events like Comic Con, where they can be immersed in their favorite activities. They don’t all cosplay, but when they do, there’s a very good chance you’ve found a prospect.
Additionally, you should be aware that there is a very strong “hook-up culture” at conventions, which is strengthened by cosplay. When some girls dress up as their favorite characters, they like to actually become those characters as much as possible within their own minds. Such cosplayers aren’t merely wearing a costume; they try their best to act and react as their character would.
In my experience, at least part of this is because it gives the girl an “out” to satisfy her baser urges without feeling as if she’s crossed a line. If you’re familiar with the popular college dictum that sex enjoyed during spring break doesn’t count as cheating (and in many cases, isn’t even considered to have happened at all), you know where I’m going here.
Girls at gaming conventions tend to get friskier than they would be normally.
I’ve seen rigorously monogamous girls in relationships, as well as those with strong religious convictions, ignore such normally sacred considerations at conventions and go upstairs with the first guy who puts on the right moves, because you see, it wasn’t her having sex. All of that aside, most guys who would be specifically interested in gamer girl dating are more comfortable searching online, and as luck would have it, this is an entirely serviceable option. Twitch is definitely one of the first places you’ll want to look, as gamer girls absolutely love it there; they’re quite fond of streaming themselves playing their favorite games on the popular platform, because they’re virtually guaranteed to amass a large following (for understandable reasons).
